What is Autism?

ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism or ASD is a broad range of development disorder characterized by difficulties in socialization and communication and restricted/ repetitive pattern of behavior and interest.

Autism appears to have it’s roots in very early brain development and the most obvious signs and symptoms of autism emerge between 2 and 3 years of age.

Signs of Autism

The signs and symptoms of autism in children can be categorized in three and each category corresponds to a different type of treatment.

Communication and Speech

Speech delay
Rarely speaks or does not speak
Repeat words and phrases heard previously
Does not share meaningful conversations
Does not engage in reciprocal communication
Does not maintain eye contact when communicating
Hums or babbles a lot

Academic

Weak Phonetics Skills
Weak in applying concepts taught in mainstream school
Weak in solving Math problems
Weak in Comprehension

Behavior

Displays attachment to routine
displays excessive anger when routines are changed
tendency to flap fingers, hands, rock their bodies excessively
looks at things from the corners of their eyes
Lacks the display of emotions
Often pre-occupied with arranging toys in the same pattern
Often plays alone despite having peers
Limited interest in patterns

How to treat Autism?

Because there’s no consensus explanation for what causes Autism, there is no widely accepted medical treatment for Autism yet. However there are other effective ways that can help your child.
