Food is one of the most important among our basic needs. Aside from keeping us alive and going, food does a lot of wonder in our body that we may never know. As to the saying “You are what you eat”, the food that we eat reflects us as a person. Thus, it’s very important for us to have a proper and healthy diet. Aside from its physiological effects, food also affects our emotional and mental well being. In fact, a proper diet can also help people especially the children with learning disabilities.

Here are some of the food beneficial for people who have learning difficulties:

Eggs and dairy products – eggs have a lot of proteins and amino acids that is good for our health. It contains choline – an essential nutrient that helps the brain and the nervous system function properly. Eggs and dairy products also contain methionine– an essential amino acid that affects behavior and learning.

Chicken, Pork and beef – meat is a great source of protein and iron, but it also contains zinc which is very important for brain tissues. Zinc protects the brain from stress that leads to aging or slow processing. These type of food helps fight Zinc deficiency that is commonly found in children with dyslexia.

Soy Milk – Soymilk is the best substitute as milk for children who are lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerant may cause physical and mental problems to children who are suffering from this, so soymilk is the best remedy. It also contains calcium that is essential in strengthening and development of bones and teeth.

Broccoli – broccoli is rich in nutrients that helps in memory retention. It is also a source of Vitamin C, beta-carotene, magnesium and calcium.

Fish (mackerel, salmon and trout) – these types of fished are rich in omega-3 acids that are good for brain development and visual acuity.

   As parents, it’s your responsibility to check what you’re feeding them. Know whether they are allergic to certain food and avoid giving them processed food in their diet.

While it is known that learning difficulties cannot be cured it is possible to mitigate its effects. It’s still good to consider certain measures such as maintaining a proper diet to help reduce its symptoms. A proper and healthy diet does not only give us a sound body but also a sound mind.
