ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)

  1.  Autism is a range of development disorder characterised by difficulties in socialisation and communication and restricted/ repetitive pattern of behaviour and interest.
  2. Autism appears to have it’s roots in very early brain development and the most obvious signs and symptoms of autism emerge between 2 and 3 years of age.
  3.  Examples of ASD:
    • Autism
    •  Aspergers Syndrome
    • Childhood disintegrative Disorder (CDD)
    • Pervasive Development Disorder – Non Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

ASD Red Flags

  • Marked impairment in the use of multiple nonverbal behaviors such as eye-to-eye gaze, facial expression, body postures, and gestures to regulate social interaction
  • Failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level
  • Lack of social or emotional reciprocity
  • Delay in, or total lack of, the development of spoken language
  • Stereotyped and repetitive use of language or idiosyncratic language
